Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at carrie@hhhomesteadfarm.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes—our chickens are pasture-raised and free-range, which means they live outdoors with plenty of room to roam. Every day they forage for grasses, seeds, and insects while enjoying fresh air and sunshine. Unlike “free-range” labels at the grocery store—which can sometimes mean only a small outdoor door is available—our birds truly spend their days on open pasture.

This lifestyle keeps them healthier, happier, and more active, while also producing chicken that’s more flavorful and nutrient-rich.

No, we do not use antibiotics or hormones on our chickens at Haubert Heritage Homestead Farm, LLC. We believe in raising our chickens naturally and sustainably.

We ship within Colorado. We do not ship to other states at this time.

The Cornish Cross is a hybrid chicken developed by crossing Cornish and White Rock breeds. They are bred specifically for rapid growth, converting feed into meat very efficiently. Because of this, they reach market weight—usually 5–7 pounds—in just 6 to 8 weeks, much faster than traditional or heritage breeds.

These birds have large breasts, plump bodies, and tender meat, which is why they dominate the grocery store and restaurant markets. However, their rapid growth makes them less hardy than slower-growing breeds. They often require careful management, plenty of feed, and sometimes limited activity to prevent health problems like leg weakness or heart strain.

Heritage breed chickens are traditional breeds that have been raised for generations, prized for their natural hardiness, rich flavor, and ability to thrive on pasture. Unlike modern commercial hybrids, heritage breeds grow at a slower, more natural pace, producing healthier eggs and meat with exceptional taste and nutritional value. They also play an important role in preserving agricultural biodiversity, keeping alive the genetics of rare and endangered poultry lines. Choosing heritage breeds means supporting sustainable farming and savoring food the way it was meant to be.

Our chickens enjoy a natural, varied diet that changes with the seasons. Every day they forage on fresh pasture, pecking at grasses, clover, seeds, and a wide variety of bugs and insects. This natural behavior keeps them active and healthy while producing richer, more flavorful meat and eggs.

To ensure balanced nutrition, we also supplement their foraged diet with a locally sourced, non-GMO feed that provides essential grains, vitamins, and minerals. The combination of pasture greens, protein from insects, and high-quality feed creates a wholesome diet that supports both the birds’ well-being and the nutrient density of the food they provide.

At Haubert Heritage Homestead Farm, LLC, we raise a carefully selected mix of heritage and traditional breeds to balance flavor, sustainability, and tradition.

  • Australorp – Gentle birds and excellent layers, known for their rich brown eggs.
  • Barred Plymouth Rock – Hardy and dependable, with striking black-and-white feathers.
  • Cornish Cross – The classic meat bird, prized for its plump, tender meat.
  • Delaware – Dual-purpose birds, valued for both flavorful meat and reliable egg production.
  • New Hampshire Red – Fast-growing and robust, ideal for hearty meals.
  • Rhode Island Red – A true American classic, hardy and consistent egg layers.

By raising both heritage breeds and traditional meat birds, we not only preserve agricultural biodiversity but also ensure our customers enjoy chicken that is flavorful, nutrient-dense, and raised with care for the land and animals.

 1. Better Taste & Nutrition
Our chickens are raised on fresh pasture where they forage for grasses, seeds, and insects, resulting in meat that’s more flavorful, tender, and nutrient-dense than conventional chicken. Grocery store birds are bred for speed and uniformity, not quality.

2. Humane & Healthy Living
Our flocks live outdoors with space to roam, scratch, and dust bathe—just being chickens! This makes them healthier and less stressed compared to factory-raised birds confined in crowded barns.

3. No Hidden Additives
You won’t find chlorine baths, injected solutions, or mystery preservatives here. Just clean, wholesome chicken processed with care.

4. Supporting Local & Sustainable Farming
Every purchase supports a local farm family (not a giant corporation) and helps protect agricultural biodiversity, open space, and regenerative soil practices.

5. Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food
When you buy from us, you know exactly how your chicken was raised, what it ate, and the values behind it. That transparency and trust don’t come shrink-wrapped in a grocery aisle.
